What Happened to Me
Sofia Mantega was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and had lived there for most of her life. When her mother was killed in a riot, her uncle refused to take care of her. Sofia was then sent to her father's, who lived in the United States. He had previously not known about Sofia. He owned a major supermarket chain. Upon her arrival, he laid down three rules for Sofia. The first, she would learn english before she started school, she would attain good grades while she was in school, and she would not use her mutant powers. If she followed these rules she would want for nothing. Before school started, Sofia did in fact learned english.
Sofia then started going to the local school, but she had trouble fitting in. Despite all her best efforts to make friends, Sofia had not made a single friend in school. On her birthday she heard people talking about her behind her back, talking about how no one liked her. After that, Sofia snapped. She went to one of her father's stores and let loose a power hurricane inside. The police found Sofia in a fetal position before they arrested her and took her too jail. Her father was then approached by Danielle Moonstar, who 'persuaded' him to allow Sofia to attend Xavier's school. Danielle herself was the one who convinced Sofia to come to the school.
One of the first people at Xavier's that Sofia met was Hellion, Julian Keller, who offered to give her a guide of the place. Julian had found himself attracted to Sofia, who rejected his advances because of his behavior towards her new friends, despite finding herself attracted to him. Unlike her time spent at the public high school back when she was staying with her father, Sofia made good friends at Xaviers. She was well liked by all. Sofia became part of the New Mutants. When Prodigy refused the role of leader, Sofia stepped up and took up the position. She however had a difficult time of leading the team and soon convinced Prodigy to lead the team, although he agreed to co-lead the team with her.
